First brew in the new place (or happy birthday to me)

I woke up at 6am this morning because I wanted to brew some beer and beat the 98 degree temps that are forecast for today. To simplify things I made an extract pale ale. I used 7lbs of light dry malt extract that I picked up at the new homebrew store, BIY, in Marion. I had a bunch of hops laying around in the freezer, so I threw in 2 oz of 17%AA Columbus hops. Since it is all extract, I only did a 15 minutes boil.

The big snag was cooling the wort. I was washing off my immersion chiller when I noticed the pipe was burst in several spots. It must have had water in it that froze over the winter. No big deal, I took an old laundry tub and filled it half full with water. Once I was done with the boil, I put the kettle in this water. Since we have such a hyperactive ice maker, I took the entire tray, probably over a pound of ice and dumped it into the water bath to help provide a little more cooling. In an hour of so I will throw the kettle into my brew fridge and hopefully it will cool down enough to pitch yeast by tonight.

Not super in depth brewing, but it will get something into my keg in a few weeks. I will probably dry-hop it with some home grown Cascade hops, yum.

Besides, there are only a few ways I'd rather spend my birthday than brewing up some beer on a beautiful morning.
